2017 PRESS RELEASE

Opera Brittenica Presents a Revolutionary Opera for the Masses

Boston MA, May 10, 2017:  Opera Brittenica, ends the 2016-2017 opera season with a bang presenting – Le Opera Noli Me Tangere. This is being co-produced with the Mid Atlantic Foundation for Asian Artists (MAFFAA) in collaboration with its original producers KGB Production in presenting this rare masterpiece from one of Asia’s great composers – Felipe de Leon with limited performances from June 16 through June 18, 2017 at the historic Strand Theater.

Opera Brittenica is coming out of a hiatus to produce this important tale set in music and bring this breathtaking production to life for the people of Boston. Dubbed by the Richmond Free Press as the ‘People’s Opera,’ this rare masterpiece was based from the novel written in 1887 by Dr Jose Rizal, the inspiration of which began from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, reflects the social cancer of the time, continue to resonate in the present day.

This modern day opera has created a dramatic storyline of unrequited love, betrayal and revenge.  With soaring arias and accompanied by beautiful, melodious music, the entire novella has one of many twists and turns, including a mad scene – a first in opera – a crocodile attack!

A first of its kind to introduce Tagalog as a lyric language w/ English supertitles, this brings to stage a new expression of the vocal arts, with the unification of Western classical traditions, and the emergence of a modern Filipino opera.

In anticipation of the work’s national tour, Lorna Imperial-Seidel, founder of the Mid Atlantic Foundation for Asian Artists (MAFFAA) assembled a philanthropic powerhouse of community leaders in the greater Boston area through the Leadership Foundation led by Atty Letty Hermosa to develop fundraising initiatives and create greater awareness by enlisting the producers from Chicago – KGB Productions, with their original & creative vision that will raise the bar in promoting diversity through the arts.

This grand masterpiece will once again come alive in a new American production at the historic Strand Theater with limited engagements beginning with a gala night on June 16 at 7:00 pm, followed by June 17 at 7:00 pm & ending on June 18, 2017 for a matinee performance at 3:00 pm.
